Birthday Card Initiative

AoUoN-NNJ's Birthday Card Writing Initiative was launched to reach out to each person incarcerated at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women on their birthday so that they may know there is a whole community of people that see them and wait for them to come home. And when that time comes, our hope is that they know we are here and will continue to provide support – from incarceration to re-entry and beyond.
This type of correspondence is a critical piece to establishing trust, continuous communication, and support. We need your help. If you (as an individual, part of an advocacy group, or an organization) would like to participate, we need help in the purchasing, writing out, and mailing of birthday cards as well as printing out All of Us or None information to enclose. If providing postage will be a hardship or you do not have access to a printer, please let us know and we can work together to find solutions. We would provide you with a list of people to write to as well as easy to follow guidelines so that we can ensure our wishes reach our comrades on the inside. Whether you can do this for one month or more frequently, we welcome any and all support. On average, there are about 40 cards to write per month. We ask that each group commit to writing a minimum 20 cards out that month. What we ask is that you let us know how many people you can write to and what month(s) you can commit to working on this initiative with us.
